Stylish thinking. And lots of work. My flatmate and Fashion Design student Emily-Mei Cross on her favourite fashion designs and inspirations.
What was your first fashion design? - GCSE project. I made a wool dress with a hood. Mixing street/sports wear with evening wear.
Tell me about your style inspirations. - It could be anything really. The weather, mood, colours or things I’ve seen during the day or photographs.
3 words that describe your fashion designs? - Quirky, detailed, photorealistic.
What’s in your wardrobe? - Mostly knitwear, can get enough of jumpers and shrugs. The rest of my wardrobe is made up of shoes (and I wonder why I never have money!).
Finish the sentence ”it’s not fashionable but…” - In my opinion nothing is unfashionable. It may look bad but everyone has their own opinion and if it’s a garment, it’s fashion.
What do you want to be when you graduate? - Unsure at the moment. Might pursue a career in Fashion Illustration or work for a designer and eventually make my own label.
Who are your favourite designers? Or people who influence your works on style? - Lanvin is a big influence in my work and Nina Ricci. As well as designers I find artistic often change my style, such as Mats Gustafsson, David Dawnton, Garance Dore and Laura Laine who are all Fashion illustrators.
So what’s your styling tip? - Mix and match, but don’t have to stick with set colours. Mix shapes with different garments and don’t be scared to contrast!
How can you individualise a high street look? - Don’t just target high street shops: vintage shops are a good source of unique and stylish buys. Also explore new shops - you might find good bargains.
